In this research, the crude lignin was subjected to a chemical modification process, i.e., sulfomethylation, in order to improve its reactivity ratio and to increase its solubility in water. Unmodified (crude) and sulfomethylated lignin were mixed with starch and then, applied on the test liner papers by surface. The results of the colorimetric tests showed that the lightness decreased for the paper sized with unmodified lignin compared to the control paper. The results indicated the positive effect of the chemical modification in improvement of the lightness value of the liner test papers. However, in case of colorimetry indexes of black/ cyan ink, no significant difference observed among the samples. On the contrary, application of magenta/ yellow ink made a significant difference. According to the results of the optical density test, the lowest value was observed in the sample containing starch which is rather close to the control. The optical density measurement indicated higher relative values for lignin-based solutions either unmodified or modified ones.
